Lovecraft is a haunting tale of ancestral obsession, arcane knowledge, and the terrifying consequences of tampering with the unknown. Set in Providence, Rhode Island, the novella follows the young antiquarian Charles Dexter Ward as he becomes increasingly consumed by his research into his sinister ancestor, Joseph Curwen—an 18th-century occultist reputed to have dabbled in necromancy. As Ward resurrects Curwen’s forbidden experiments, the boundary between past and present begins to collapse, unleashing forces that threaten his very identity. Though the story was written in 1927, it remained unpublished until it appeared in abridged form in Weird Tales in 1941. It was later included in Arkham House’s Beyond the Wall of Sleep (1943), but it wasn’t until 1951 that the novel was first published in standalone book form by Victor Gollancz Ltd in London. This edition, the first to present the complete story as a single volume, is now highly prized among collectors of Lovecraftian fiction.
