Description
Long story. When I first started collecting dolls, I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t ask many questions or know what to ask. When I saw this charming wax doll, I knew nothing about wax dolls but went out on a limb and paid more than I ever had for a doll. 15 years ago. I never undressed her or examined her. She had stockings on and slippers. Now that I am selling my dolls, I was getting ready to photograph her. I removed her clothing and saw that her arms are good but hanging loosely. Her cloth body is well stuffed but very dirty or grayed. The legs were sort of deformed when I got her but when I moved her one leg just crumbled. The other seems ok but now she is an amputee. The beautiful silk dress was melting and not salvageable but the lace was too beautiful to throwaway. So, I dug in my supplies and found a large piece of silk the exact right shade of antique ivory. So, the lace parts are original. The silk ruching has some melting but doesn’t show. I also found some old crepe type silk and made her a slip and bloomers. Her head was good but the hair is just a stubble. I found an old mohair wig which I cleaned and curled and it looks very nice, I think. I just put a pin in it to hold it in place along with the original bonnet. A new owner will want to glue the edges down. Here is the original description. Made y Montanari c1880 this precious precious poured wax doll represents years of age.Hand-written on her stomach is “Montanari //180Soho-Bazaar molded head turned to her left,original blue spiral glass eyes are factory set, blonde mohair overs her head under a silk bow, straw and cotton stuffed body with wax lower limbs. Head measures 5” tall, 6 “ across the shoulders ( wax) and 3 1/4 front torso circumference.eyebrows are incised and handprints ted as are subtly rosy cheeks and mouth. She is a good sitter with stitched joints at shoulders, hips and knees. The rest was cut off my copy. I had a hard time finding the writing on the stomach but it is there. Unfortunately, I was going to put this doll on RL but decided to try eBay first. I had taken multiple pictures with my camera but I only do eBay on my iPad and forgot to take naked pictures of her. For the moment if you want to see those, message me and I can send them until I figure out how to transfer them. Now that you have taken the time to read my novel. I paid $1500 for her but if I can get $500, I will sell her. Otherwise, I will just take her to my grave. I thought I would give her a chance to be loved for another 100 years. I charge actual shipping and no handling fee. I don’t t want this one going back and forth so don’t want returns unless eBay demands it. I have described her as accurately as I can and although imperfect, she is quite beautiful. I am firm on the prices of this one. The item was well packaged for safety and arrived ahead of the eBay window. Great care was taken to preserve the item and it looks just as described. Given the market, I feel I got a fair value. There were little extras included to make this purchase special. This will make a wonderful addition to my collection.
Doll arrived in great condition; very clean & better than can be seen in photos. Doll was wrapped in clean plastic bags & padded by wads of plastic grocery bags in sturdy packing box. Fair price. Very happy.
