Item specifics: Size: Approx. 25 inches long by 20 inches wide (mounted board size) Item specifics This beautiful wallpaper sample sheet dates to the late 19th to early 20th century and perfectly captures the period’s fascination with stylized form, surface pattern, and harmonious color. The upper paper features a bold, graphic floral repeat arranged in a radiating, almost architectural layout, with warm blush, soft brown, muted gold, and cream tones that feel distinctly Arts and Crafts moving toward early Art Nouveau. Below, the flowing cloud-like design is more restrained and atmospheric, with softly drifting forms outlined in white over a warm ochre ground, creating a wonderful contrast in mood and movement. Together, these two papers show the era’s balance between decorative richness and calm, rhythmic patterning, all on original antique paper with gentle wear that gives them a lovely wabi sabi presence. Mounted on sturdy to semi-sturdy modern board, each piece offers a glimpse into the design language, color palettes, and decorative tastes of the past. Many examples within this group are hand printed using hand carved wooden blocks, showing the subtle variation, depth, and character that only traditional block printing can achieve. It just doesn't get any higher of an art form, big bold and beautiful! These pieces were clearly valued and preserved rather than discarded — likely used by a design house as a design catalog, a decorator, or collector with a very good eye! It's such a sources of inspiration. Today, they are just as compelling. They would be magnificent framed as wall art, bringing instant history and soul to a space, or kept as design inspiration for interiors, textiles, or creative work. One of the most exciting ways to display these studies is by mixing and matching several together. Hung as a group, they create a dramatic, layered effect — combining pattern, color, scale, and period in a way that feels collected, intentional, and richly textured. Pairing bold motifs with quieter designs or contrasting centuries side by side results in an incredibly striking and personal display. I love that these studies survived in this form. Using and displaying historic wallpaper fragments like this is a thoughtful and sustainable way to honor decorative history, allowing these beautiful remnants to live on in modern homes.
