Prototype History The Pacific Car and Foundry 50-foot insulated exterior-post boxcars were built in large numbers starting in the late 1960s. Great Northern acquired these rugged cars to protect temperature-sensitive, high-value commodities like canned goods, beverages, and paper products from extreme weather. The 10-foot plug door provided a tight, flush seal to maintain interior conditions while offering a wide opening for easy forklift access. Painted in the short-lived but beloved Big Sky Blue scheme introduced shortly before the Burlington Northern merger, these cars stood out beautifully in manifest freights and continued to serve for decades across the entire pool network.
