This was certainly the first gay magazine I ever saw on the newsstand, and at 20 years of age in 1980, I was gobsmacked! BLUEBOY Magazine ~ Vintage Rare ~ April 1981 Gay Men's Magazine This issue featured models Bobby, Terry, and Al, PLUS the fiction stories "To the Victor," by Richard Michaels, "Expertise," by Felice Picano (!!), and "Another Time," by Brian Daniels. Founded in 1974, Blueboy was one of the first nationally and internationally distributed gay men's magazines in the U.S. WOW! This was certainly the first gay magazine I ever saw on the newsstand, and at 20 years of age in 1980, I was gobsmacked! Billed as "The National Magazine About Men ," it was conceived as a high-quality, glossy alternative to mainstream publications, often described as a gay version of "Playboy." During its peak in the 1970s and early 1980s, it was a major lifestyle brand and even became the first gay public corporation traded on Wall Street . The magazine was known for its blend of artistic eroticism and sophisticated cultural commentary: Photography: was its photography the best in the world? Nope. But we didn't mind. This is what we had. And it was so awesome to have a magazine like this that wasn't called "Playgirl"! This was OUR magazine! Literary Merit: Blueboy published works by prestigious authors and thinkers, including Andy Warhol , Truman Capote , William S. Burroughs , and Christopher Isherwood . Social Coverage: It provided a platform for discussing critical issues of the time, such as gay rights, politics, and the early AIDS epidemic. 1974
