In his youth Cline describes himself as "addicted to video games and movies", in particular Star Wars, John Hughes movies, and tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons, something which would greatly influence his writing. As he entered adulthood, Cline worked in information technology, writing screenplays in his spare time. In the late 1990's Cline co-wrote the screenplay for the movie 'Fanboys', something which he said changed his life upon its release in 2009. The connections he'd made during the production of Fanboys led Cline to selling the movie rights to his first novel 'Ready Player One' just one day after it's release. 'Ready Player One' was a highly successful novel set in the dystopic year 2045. It was sold in a bidding war to Crown Publishing in 2010 and released in 2011. The same day an audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton released, and the following day Cline sold the film rights to Warner Brothers. 'Ready Player One' saw a great deal of critical and commercial success in its novelization, but that success would not be shared in its film adaptation in 2018 nor in its sequel 'Ready Player Two', which received widely negative reviews.
