Importance includes ... An advertisement for The Gay Liberation Front (specifically for Texas) which was the name of several gay liberation groups, the first of which was formed in New York City in 1969, immediately after the Stonewall riots, and provided a voice for the newly-out and newly radicalized gay community, and a meeting place for a number of activists. Uses the word "homophile," which was commonly used by such organizations in an effort to deemphasize the sexual aspect of homosexuality and emphasize instead the romantic aspect of same-sex relationships, by replacing the "sexual" suffix with the Greek root "philos," meaning love. And I was amused to see a full-page ad for a penis enlargement machine! Content: The magazine featured a mix of lifestyle stories, news from the Houston gay scene, health information, humor, and photography. Notable features in early issues included: The "Gayboy's Gay-mate of the Month" (featured on the cover of the first issue was professional model Troy McDonald ). A comic strip titled "Hero Superdong" Coverage of the first annual Gay Pride Parade in Dallas (June 1972) in subsequent issues. Initially published at a price of $3.00, the magazine aimed to become a monthly publication by 1971 to provide a "showcase" for LGBTQ writers and artists. It is now considered a rare piece of early LGBTQ media history! While it shared a similar name and focus to the more widely known Blueboy Magazine (founded later in 1974), "Gayboy" was a distinct publication tied specifically to the burgeoning gay liberation movement in the Southern United States.
