Giovanni De Simone was born into the Italian aristocracy. He was influenced by the Sicilian culture around him, portraying scenes of the marketplace, wine making, and fishing. Here is a gorgeous vintage Giovanni De Simone pottery plate from Italy. It has an abstract fish design, lovely mid-century Italian work. This lovely pottery piece is decorated in aqua, yellow, purple, green, red, and bright blue on a white background. Signed on the bottom: DeSimone, Italy. The piece is 8.5 inches across. History: The DeSimone line of pottery was started in the mid-20th century. Giovanni De Simone was born into the Italian aristocracy. Having studied under friend and famed artist Pablo Picasso, Giovanni picked up on the simple lines and bright colors of the cubist style. He was influenced by the Sicilian culture around him, portraying scenes of the marketplace, wine making, and fishing. Giovanni De Simone was the founder of Ceramiche. Giovanni De Simone, born in 1930, opened his studio in Palermo, Sicily soon after the end of World War II. He died in 1991; Giovanni had retired ten years earlier (1981). DeSimone was a painter, sculptor, writer, beloved husband, and father of Rosita, Susanna and Margherita. “Ceramiche De Simone” was founded at the beginning of the 1950's. The company was at the forefront of the world of Sicilian and international ceramic art thanks to its unique and original style, which derives from the masters Picasso, Matisse, Leger and Klee, as well as everyday situations taken from folklore and Sicilian traditions.
