Description
This is an18 mm. Japanese atsunomi or timber-framing chisel. These chisels are both longer and thicker than the ordinary Japanese bench chisels. Atsunomi are typically used for cutting deep mortises in timber frame construction. Laminated blade measures about 2 ¾ in. long, while overall chisel length is 11 ⅜ in. or about 29 cm. Blade width, according to the traditional Japanese measuring system, is 6 bu, which translates to about 18 mm., just a hair shy of ¾ in. The blade, which is in remarkably good condition, is stamped toroku (registered) and bears the Zensaku mark. The Zensaku line of Osaka chisel makers was active from the 1910s to about 1953. The original handle, which was fairly beaten up and shortened, has been replaced with a new Japanese red oak (akagashi) handle with a preset top ring (katsura). I actually had quite a bit of trouble finding a handle that fit, since this particular atsunomi has an unusually thick tang (21 mm where the tang meets the narrow end of the ferrule). Sharp and ready to use. Whether used for timber framing or for cutting the larger mortises on furniture pieces, this well-made, heavy-duty Japanese chisel will get the job done! Comes in a shop-made wooden box.
