Description Item Description This is a pair of Mashiko ware inlaid teacups (Meoto Yunomi) by Tatsuzo Shimaoka, a renowned Japanese potter designated as a Living National Treasure. About the Meoto Yunomi (Husband & Wife Teacup Set) In Japanese culture, a “Meoto Yunomi” is a traditional husband-and-wife teacup set, consisting of one slightly larger cup and one smaller cup. This pairing symbolizes harmony, balance, and lifelong companionship, and such sets are commonly gifted for weddings, anniversaries, or to celebrate a shared life together. When created by a master potter, a meoto yunomi is valued not only as a daily-use tea vessel, but also as a culturally meaningful work of art representing Japanese aesthetics and tradition. Signature / Inscription The original wooden storage box (tomobako) is inscribed and signed. The teacups themselves are not signed. This is a common and authentic practice in Japanese ceramics, where the artist’s inscription on the tomobako serves as proof of authorship and origin. Condition Very good condition overall. No noticeable chips or cracks. Please note that minor variations in glaze, texture, and firing marks are natural characteristics of handmade ceramics. Size (approx.)
