Description

NIADA Artist Susan Fosnot Small 7 1/4" Blonde Hair Cloth Child Doll Signed. This "big eyed" 7 1/4" cloth child doll with a sweetly shy countenance was designed and hand painted by the late NIADA and ODACA doll artist Susan Fosnot, probably as a "Doll Starts Kit" doll. She is signed on the back of her head, "Fosnot.". This "big eyed" 7 1/4" cloth child doll with a sweetly shy countenance was designed and hand painted by the late NIADA and ODACA doll artist Susan Fosnot, probably as a "Doll Starts Kit" doll. She is signed on the back of her head, "Fosnot." The doll is a "one-of-a-kind" doll, as so often when interviewed, the late Susan Fosnot spoke about her dolls as one-of-a-kinds. The doll's flat face has been sensitively hand painted onto a stuffed oval cloth head in the style of "trompe l'oeil" or "fool the eye," a painting style that Fosnot so often embraced. The doll's cloth body has been gently stuffed and detailed with mitten shaped hands and pointy feet. Her body fabric sustains a few yellowish spots on her upper right arm and upper back areas. Child wears a charming blue and white windowpane printed dress that is detailed with a rosette at its "V" shaped collar and coordinating shorts. Her dress could use some "finishing" touches as its collar stitching has unraveled and threads are a bit askew. The doll's head appears to have been separately formed and then sewn to her jointed cloth body. Expressively painted with large mesmerizing blue eyes, a barely perceptible smile, and wisps of blonde hair framing her face, the doll is an engaging and precious "pocket sized" child. On the ODACA website, Susan Fosnot discussed the "Doll Starts" kits that she made. Essentially, the kits came with uniquely (OOAK) hand painted doll heads and patterns that she designed. They were then "passed on to be sewn, stuffed, and dressed." The finished doll ultimately became a OOAK, as it was a collaboration between Fosnot's artistry in painting the faces & designing the patterns and the buyer's creativity in sewing the body and clothing. I do not know with certainty that this blonde hair child emerged from a "Doll Starts Kit," but her beautifully hand painted and "Fosnot" signed head is certainly a Susan Fosnot OOAK treasure.
