Roth was an award-winning author praised for his fiction, noted for it's ability to blur reality and fiction and it's explorations of American identity. Roth would first gain attention for his 1959 short story collection "Goodbye, Columbus". "Goodbye, Columbus" and the five other short stories within explores the experiences and concerns of second and third-generation Jews as they assimilated into the post-war American lifestyle of white-collar work and suburbia. "Goodbye, Columbus" would receive some controversy following it's publication for it's poor depiction of some Jewish characters, earning accusations that Roth was a self-hating Jew. Despite the controversy, "Goodbye, Columbus" saw widespread commercial and critical success, earning the 1960 U.S. National Book Award for Fiction and a 1969 movie adaptation of the titular novella.
