Photo Overview This original 8x10 press photo captures director and co-writer Phil Alden Robinson on the set of Universal Pictures' 1992 thriller "Sneakers," peering intently past a Panavision camera. Robinson, wearing a baseball cap and glasses, is shown in a candid behind-the-scenes moment alongside a camera operator, conveying the focused energy of a working film set. The photo was taken by photographer Melinda Sue Gordon. The film "Sneakers" featured an all-star ensemble cast including Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier, and David Strathairn. Music was composed by James Horner, with jazz legend Branford Marsalis also featured.Historical Notes Released in September 1992, "Sneakers" was a modest box-office success, earning approximately $105 million worldwide against a $35 million budget. The film has since developed a devoted cult following, particularly among tech and hacker communities, for its prescient themes of digital security, surveillance, and cryptography -- ideas that feel even more relevant today than they did in 1992.Tragically, River Phoenix -- who played the young hacker 'Carl Arbogast' in the film -- died on October 31, 1993, just over a year after the movie's release, making this one of his final film appearances. His performance in "Sneakers" stands as part of his celebrated but short-lived career. Director Phil Alden Robinson went on to direct "The Sum of All Fears" (2002), while the rest of the ensemble cast continued to have distinguished careers in Hollywood.Text Present Below the photo image (front):"Director/co-writer PHIL ALDEN ROBINSON."Upper right: "2210-9"Lower right: "Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon"Below caption block (front):"UNIVERSAL PICTURES Presents A LASKER/PARKES Production A PHIL ALDEN ROBINSON Film ROBERT REDFORD DAN AYKROYD BEN KINGSLEY MARY McDONNELL RIVER PHOENIX SIDNEY POITIER DAVID STRATHAIRN "SNEAKERS" Music by JAMES HORNER Featuring BRANFORD MARSALIS Costumes Designed by BERNIE POLLACK Executive Producer LINDSLEY PARSONS, JR.
