I’ve had several copies of this title over the years, but this is the first non-library copy I have owned. These are quite tricky to track down. Just for kicks, pretend you are Boston Red Sox manager Pinky Higgins In the mid-late 1950’s. You are managing an outfield consisting of Ted Williams, likely the greatest pure hitter of all time but whose career is winding down and who was allegedly difficult to get along with; Jackie Jensen in centerfield, who was crowned the next Mickey Mantle and over a six year period with the Red Sox, he played like it - averaging 28 HR’s - 111 RBI - 14 SB - .285 BA over that span. Jensen was a 2 X All-Star. He also was deathly afraid of flying and retired in his prime due to Baseball expanding to the West Coast - thus causing the need for more flights. Finally, in right field there was Jimmy Piersall, another great young player …a 2 X All-Star himself, who put up very good numbers over multiple years (though not as stellar as Jensen). Piersall’s only problem was he was Bi-Polar, which caused him to be institutionalized and miss most of a season in 1952. He was an early user of Lithium, which helped to even him out. It is truly the definition of a crazy outfield. Poor Pinky.
