ABOUT THE PUBLISHER The Reilly & Lee Co. was a prominent American publishing house renowned for its significant role in the Oz book series. Originally established in 1904 as Reilly & Britton by Frank Kennicott Reilly and Sumner Charles Britton, the company was formed after the George M. Hill Company, the original publisher of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, went into receivership. Reilly & Britton secured an exclusive contract with L. Frank Baum, leading to the publication of The Marvelous Land of Oz in 1904, the first of many Oz books they would release. In 1919, the company underwent a rebranding, becoming Reilly & Lee. Under this new name, they continued to publish the Oz series, including works by Ruth Plumly Thompson, who was appointed to continue the series after Baum's death. Thompson contributed 19 Oz titles between 1921 and 1939. The company's fortunes declined by mid-century, and in 1959, Reilly & Lee was acquired by the Henry Regnery Company, ending its independent existence. Today, Reilly & Lee's editions of the Oz books are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, reflecting the company's enduring legacy in children's literature.
