Description

VTG Kutani Japanese Porcelain Incense Burner Koro Occupied Japan Shishi 5". This is a stunning example of post-war Japanese craftsmanship—a hexagonal Kutani porcelain Koro (incense burner) featuring a hand-painted Shishi (Guardian Lion) finial. This piece is explicitly marked "Made in Occupied Japan" on the base, dating it precisely between 1945 and 1952. The burner is decorated in the classic Kutani Aka-e (red enamel) style with heavy gold gilt accents. The panels feature intricate scenes, including scholars playing the traditional game of Go under a pine tree, and a vibrant floral display of chrysanthemums. The lid is pierced to allow incense smoke to rise, and the cobalt blue Shishi finial provides a beautiful contrast to the warm orange and gold tones of the body. Condition: The piece is in excellent vintage condition. The gold gilding on the rim and shoulders remains bright and well-preserved. There are no chips or cracks visible on the body or lid. As is common with porcelain of this age, there is minor shelf wear on the unglazed feet. Specifications: Height: 5 inches Circumference: 9 inches Weight: 10.4 oz Origin: Japan (Occupied Period) Material: Hand-painted porcelain
