Description
Vintage 1940s Cloth-Over-Composition Doll 10” Glass Eyes Handmade European Folk. • Inset glass eyes (fixed, not sleep eyes) — an uncommon, high-quality detail. Approximate Era: Circa 1940s. European doll features the rarer cloth-over-composition construction — a transitional design between soft rag dolls and more lifelike postwar art dolls. She measures approximately 10 inches tall and includes these distinctive features: • Hard composition head covered with fine stockinette fabric, giving a realistic shape beneath the soft finish • Inset glass eyes (fixed, not sleep eyes) — an uncommon, high-quality detail • Hand-painted facial features with lovely expression and character • Hard stuffed cloth body with felt hands and stitched fingers • Original handmade clothing, including wool jacket, green blouse, houndstooth trousers, kerchief, and felt hat are showing mild age wear consistent with vintage condition. The headscarf, jacket, and wool trousers also fit well with Central or Eastern European peasant costume motifs. The materials and styling suggest Central or Eastern European origin, likely Czechoslovakia, Poland, or Italy, produced shortly after WWII. This type of doll was often sold as a folk or regional souvenir and made in small artisan workshops influenced by Lenci and Käthe Kruse designs. Very good vintage condition overall except for the shoes. Clothing and body show mild age wear. Approximate Era: Circa 1940s Construction: Cloth-over-composition head, glass eyes, felt hands Height: ~10 inches A wonderful example of a mid-century European artisan doll, highly collectible for its rare glass-eye construction and charming handmade attire.
