Jasperware having been invented by Josiah Wedgwood in 1774 to replicate the Roman Masterpiece “The Portland Vase” which resides at the British museum. An enormously influential, and frequently smashed, glass vessel from Rome of 1AD – 25AD. Scholarship advises this is a shape from the 1840s but the marking doesn’t jive with that period. So I suspect, if I were to take a wild guess, it is 1920s. The two women on the candlestick are Urania – The Muse of Astronomy and Polymnia – The Muse of the Hymn. References to the muses were very popular and many of Wedgwood’s character reference the sculpture of classicist John Flaxman. There is a blue bell wreath at the top and a swirling bouquet of flowers decorating the base. A really attractive combination of motifs. Piece is hefty, weighing 1 ½ pounds.
