Some stains in the bowl, slight crazing throughout. Markings: HERAT Rd No 26846 N W P Co B I remember buying this assuming it was yet another Bates Gildea and Walker Japonesque design. The marks indicate it is in fact New Wharf Pottery and the registration number places it squarely in 1885. Herat is the third largest city in Afghanistan. The design, however, clearly derives from a Japanese family crest. Examples found on the internet are identified in Japanese only. These crests or mons identified the Daimyo or Shogunate rather than an individual. This was useful in the clouds of battle when one wanted to see where the rest of your group was situated. Each shogunate would place their mon on the banners carried into battle. I cannot attest to whether or not this sponge bowl had a lid or strainer as many did, as I never seen another example of this pattern. So here you have the perfect small bowl for trinkets, nuts, or if serving sushi, wasabi sauce. Like much of New Wharf wares, it is well and lightly potted.
