The poem details his hilarious misadventures as he loses his hat, wig, and bottles of wine while the horse gallops far beyond his destination, only to return safely home, much to the amusement of onlookers. Cowper wrote the poem after hearing the story from Lady Austen, and it became so popular that pirate copies and illustrations were widely circulated. “Stop. Stop. John Gilpin! Here’s the House.” Is on a banner Hanging from Gilpin’s house as he rides by on the wild horse. Chasing after him is a four-in-hand and a horseman being watched by amazed townspeople. This explains the horse head handle. In a luscious buttery ochre of salt ware glaze, with incredible detail. This is a fine smaller example of a popular 1835 jug.
